2025 Northern Schools Steer Competition

Farrer Show Team recently competed at the Northern Schools Steer Show, a major high-school livestock event involving more than 15 schools and over 80 steers. The competition included parader classes, meat judging, and both hoof and hook sections for the steers.

This year’s Farrer team was made up of enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students—some of whom were stepping into the cattle show ring for the very first time. Despite their young age and limited experience, the students undertook all aspects of cattle preparation themselves. From breaking in and daily feeding, training and grooming, the team’s commitment and work ethic were outstanding. Their efforts were clearly reflected in the strong results achieved across all events.

Parader Results
Jackson Firth – 1st place, Heat 2
Toby Squires – 2nd place, Heat 3
Oliver Peart – 5th place, Heat 4
Josh Burke – 4th place, Heat 5
Harry Mudford – 1st place, Heat 6
Max Lye – 4th place, Heat 7
Cooper Kong – 1st place, Heat 8

These results highlight the skill, confidence, and professionalism the boys have developed through their training. It was fantastic to have 3 out of 8 students in for champion.

Hoof & Hook Results
The Farrer steers also performed exceptionally well against strong competition:
Andy – Led by Harry Mudford, placed 5th overall in the School Steer Shootout
Andy – 2nd overall in the 400–440 kg Kill Steer class
Ranger – 4th overall in the 481–520 kg Kill Steer class

We would like to thank Rosemary and Chris Clifton for supplying Farrer with excellent quality show steers and Andrew Warden from Garvin and Cousins for sourcing them for us. We would also like to thank Jodie Provost and her team from Walcha Central school for hosting the competition and their hospitality - especially in such trying conditions, we are very grateful for the opportunity.
