Legal Studies Newcastle Trip

The Year 12 Legal Studies class travelled to Newcastle for the Criminal and Family Law excursion. The visit began at the Hunter Community Legal Centre (CLC), where a solicitor provided an informative overview of Family Law and explained the role of CLCs in dispute resolution. Students then visited the Newcastle Local and District Court Complex, observing a Coronial inquest and a variety of Local Court matters.

Later in the day, the group visited Hunter Street Chambers, where two criminal defence barristers shared their insights into criminal law, the operation of the justice system, and key legal principles. That evening, students had the opportunity to reconnect with several Farrer alumni, ending the night with a tightly contested trivia competition—won by the past students.

On Friday morning, students returned to the courts to observe further Local and District Court proceedings, reinforcing key legal concepts covered in class. The group also attended a session at the Children’s Court, where Magistrate Eckhold offered valuable insight into the court’s role and the guiding principles for dealing with young offenders.

This excursion provided students with a valuable opportunity to witness the legal system in action, and appreciation is extended to the legal professionals who generously shared their time and expertise.
