“After a homesick first month my English teacher, Mrs Young, cast me in a play. From that moment I never looked back. A reasonable student but an appalling sportsman, there was never a moment I felt unsupported by this extraordinary school and by my totally trusting parents. They and the culture of Farrer provided me with a platform to pursue whatever I wanted to do, giving me ‘enough rope’ while still having a chair close by to rescue me if need be. And as a bizarre bonus I think I’m the only director currently working in opera who had to study Agriculture for the HSC.” ….
