Aboriginal & Cultural Programs

At Farrer, we are committed to providing a range of cultural, academic, and extracurricular opportunities to support our students' growth and learning.

Weekly Year group activities

Year 12
Mentoring, cultural learning, and guidance on careers and further study through the Aboriginal Community Connector Program and Tamworth LALC Opportunity Hub.

Year 11
Mentoring and cultural education through the Aboriginal Community Connector Program and Tamworth LALC Opportunity Hub.

Year 10
Participation in the Junior Ranger Program in collaboration with Tamworth LALC.

Year 7, 8 & 9
Cultural learning through Tamworth LALC Opportunity Hub

Senior Student Support

  • Years 11 and 12 students have access to weekly or fortnightly individual or small group sessions with the AECG Pirru Thangkuray program.
  • Assistance from the Post School Officer at the Tamworth LALC Opportunity Hub.
  • Organised visits from Centrelink to assist students with ABSTUDY applications for further education.

Extra Activities and Excursions

  • Cultural Performances: Didgeridoo performances at events like the State Principals Conference and New England School Counsellor’s Conference.
  • Careers on Country Day: A program attended by students in Years 9 through 12.
  • Year 7 Possum Skin Program: A cross-curricular program integrating HSIE and Art.
  • NAIDOC Week: Activities includes assemblies and after-school events.
  • Sky Story Symposium: A 3-day camp in Sydney attended by 10 Aboriginal students from selective schools.

Outside School hours programs/activities that we support

  • In 2024, four Farrer students participated in the Gomeroi Cultural Academy.
  • Farrer students are involved in Rugby League and Basketball at the PCYC Nations of Origin Tournament.
  • Students have access to a variety of volunteering opportunities.
  • Farrer students have entered their artwork in the Joblink Plus Indigenous Art Exhibition.

Wellbeing and Support

Students and their families receive support from the school's Aboriginal Support Officer, including help with ABSTUDY applications, school uniforms, and adjusting to boarding school life.
