NSW Public Speaking: The Plain English Speaking Award (PESA)

There really is a buzz in the air when the likes of Year 11 students Forbes Murdoch and Will Hamel take to the speaking stage.

Both boys competed in the local round of the statewide Plain English Speaking Awards: Speaking Public Speaking Competition, delivering a prepared eight minute speech on the topic of their choice and a three minute impromptu speech on the topic ‘Top Secret’. Each took the challenge in their respective stride and delved into some interesting territory; Forbes considered the place social image holds in the construction of our public self while Will explored the notion of context and the role it plays when trying to understand and empathise with others. Both students were pretty amazing in delivery, with Forbes finishing second and Will taking first place.

Will now faces the best of the region in the final at the end of the month. In debating and all matters speaking, the road ahead looks bright for these extraordinary Farrer gentlemen.
