Senior Geo Case Study

On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th November, Mr Olrich's Senior Geography class went to Newcastle overnight for their first HSC fieldwork excursion for the Ecosystems at Risk topic.
Thursday's case study fieldwork was at Kooragang inter-tidal wetlands. Whilst visiting the wetlands, the class undertook a number of activities and observations to understand the human activities that place the wetlands at risk. They were able to identify and describe the adaptations the wetlands have made since human settlement in the Newcastle area, as well as the management strategies in place to help remediate the site.
The second case study site was the Stockton coastal dune system. On what was a very windy day, the boys travelled around 17 km down the largest moving coastal dune system in the southern hemisphere to explore aboriginal middens dated to be thousands of years old. They also visited Tin City, a community of shacks established in the dunes during the Great Depression that still exists today. The fieldwork for both sites explored and evaluated the contemporary and traditional management strategies for each of the ecosystems. We even found some time for a bit of sandboarding!
